NITED NATIONS: Late lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir has been awarded the 2018 UN Human Rights Prize. Her daughter Munizae Jahangir was awarded the prestigious award in her mother’s name.

In recognition of the excellent achievement in human rights, the award is presented to individuals and organisations. Asma Jahangir was named in October as one of the four winners of the quinquennial award.

Winning the award for her late mother, Munizae Jahangir dedicated it to the women of Pakistan and their bravery. The ceremony was held Tuesday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Other winners included Tanzanian women’s rights activist Rebeca Gyumi; indigenous Brazilian community rights activist Joenia Wapichana and the human rights organisation Front Line Defenders in Ireland.

News International recorded earlier winners include Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, and Malala Yousafzai.

Asma Jahangir became the fourth Pakistani woman to receive a United Nations Human Rights Prize. The title was bestowed before her by Begum Ra’Ana Liaquat Ali Khan (1978), Benazir Bhutto (2008) and Malala Yousufzai (2013).

Faced with intense pressure and opposition, Asma Jahangir, who died in February, was known for her vocal nature and unrelenting pursuit of human rights and for remaining undaunted.
