Citizenship Bill lessons: Uniformity will do nothing for the nation’s progress and prosperity

Amid protests in the North East, especially in Assam and Tripura, over the centre’s move to push through the citizenship bill highlight the disastrous pre-election adventurism of the BJP. The bill is contentious within itself with the communal elements of exclusion of Muslims.

In terms of accommodating social diversities, the Indian subcontinent is very significant. Despite the partition ‘s prejudices and dense confusions, the Indian Constitution had proved its power and greatness by at its best defining secular India’s socio-political spheres. Hitherto, It served as the custodian of the marginalized and the religious minorities, by ensuring adequate security and measures for their development. The unique features and the nature of Indian constitution acted as a gatekeeper to protect the morality and values of the nation, from the waves caused due to the vested interests of every political parties who came into power, disregard of centre or the state. But the latest socio-political tensions that the country witnessed in the last four years of Modi regime worth critical analysis and pragmatic contemplation.

Citizenship Bill lessons: Uniformity will do nothing for the nation’s progress and prosperityStarting from the ordinances passed by the central government to the Supreme Court verdicts, compels the nation to be worried about the future of the country in common and the constitution in particular. The incidents of Mob-lynching and recurring communal riots in the various parts of the country are a horrifying black marks in the history of the nation. The major cause of all these tensions in the contemporary scenario is the vested interests of the extremist right wing political parties and their promotional measure to the Hindutwa ideology. The Citizenship Amendment Bill passed in Assam is no exception. But the nation witness today, an unexpected impact as a boomerang against the NDA government itself.

Amid protests in the North East, especially in Assam and Tripura, over the centre’s move to push through the citizenship bill highlight the disastrous pre-election adventurism of the BJP. The bill is contentious within itself with the communal elements of exclusion of Muslims. If the allotment of citizenship is on the basis of humanitarian perspectives, a relevant question of why the Muslims solely became an exception from these humanitarian values is echoed .In fact, over the arguments of persecution, the religion of Muslims is the bone of contention. The extremist Hindutwa party insists to eradicate the Muslim community from the nation, who posses a glorious history of past, whose ancestors had played a vital role in the nation’s freedom struggle by joining hands with the other religious people of the country with a sound of unity and brotherhood, which these political parties are trying to distroy. But incredibly, the communal interests of the BJP is an utopian vision in which, if the Muslims of the nation had a glorious legacy in the country making process,it will be continued as the resonances till the end of the nation. As if the history of a country cannot be rewritten, the same spirit will leads and inspire the Muslim community to strive for the progress and prosperity of the nation.

The BJP lead government in the centre state had promised that the states may not need to bear the extra burden of the migrant settlements. Rajendra Agarwal lead parliamentary committee had proposed to arrange the settlements to the migrants in the lower-populated area which will results in lesser impacts in the demographic changes of the states. The focus of the BJP is on the votes of the Bengali Hindus but a small propotion of the Assamese community. However, despite the BJP’s political tactic to turn the local interests into votes had reached an anti-climax in which majority of the Assamese had raised a strong protest against the bill. They raise their voice for the smooth functioning of existing Assamese communities. At first, if the migrants before the 24 March 1071 was made as legal citizens, the attempts to shift the date to December 31 2014 is the basis of the recent events. The protester’s disappoints that they are already troubling with the burden of existing migrants.

The rage of protesters has explored into new areas to pull North East in tension. So it can be concluded that the tactic of the BJP to merge Hindutwa obligation with the local interests had reached a paradoxical turn. The unexpected impacts of the Citizenship Bill are a clear sign of its far reaching consequences for such moves, which is also a great lesson for generations to come. The core of all these complexities can be traced to the lopsided rulings of the central government entangled by the communal lines. The incidents are the impacts of the central government’s moves, which is against the motives and nature of the constitution. They might have failed to understand that the diversity is the beauty of our nation as a garden with colourful flowers. So, it is the high time to understand that the attempts for the uniformity and extremism will do nothing to the progress and prosperity of the secular nation, but its ideological destruction and secular nature only.
