MUHARRAM UL HARAM
THE FIRST MONTH OF THE ISLAMIC CALENDAR
Muharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their lunar Hijrah Calendar. While followers of many religions spend their opening month in worthless merriment, the first month of Islam teaches us lessons of admonition, good counselling, knowledge of Allahu taala, sacrifice, selflessness, patience and seeking pleasure of Allahu taala. Allahu taala created Hadhrat Adam (alaihis-salaam) in this month.
Muharram is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran says, “The number of the months according to Allah is twelve (mentioned) in the Book of Allah on the day He created heavens and the earth. Among these (twelve months) there are four sanctified.”
These four months, according to the authentic traditions, are Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. All the commentators of the Holy Quran are unanimous on this point, because the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) in his sermon on the occasion of his last Hajj, declared: “One year consists of twelve months, of which four are sanctified months, three of them are in sequence; Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab.”
Hadhrat Abu Bakrah relates the fact in a hadith of the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Shabaan. (Bukhari, 2958).
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) related: “The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: ‘The best of fasting after Ramadhan is fasting Allahs month of Muharram.'” (sahih Muslim).

3.HOLDING OF GATHERINGS IN RESPECT OF HADRAT IMAAM HUSAINS MARTYRDOM DURING THE FIRST TEN DAYS OF MUHARRAM
It is permissible and lawful to hold gatherings to highlight the tragedy of Karbala i.e. the Shahadat (martyrdom) of Sayyiduna Imaam Husain (Radi Allahu Anhu) during the first ten days of Muharram or during the entire month of Muharram provided that correct narratives are expounded. The events of Karbala carry a comprehensive lesson of patience, perseverance, resoluteness and submission to Allahs will and are reflective of unflinching adherence to the standards of Islam and practical and intrepid demonstration of following the Shariah and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). He (Imaam Husain) sacrificed his children, family, relatives, companions and even his own life to save Islam. However, the blessed lives of the Prophets companions should also be summed up in such gatherings to distinguish the gatherings of Ahle Sunnat wa Jamaat from that of Shia sect.

In every rakah Surah Fatiha once, Surah Ikhlas 15 times and after completing the prayer used to bless the reward before the sacred soul of Hadhrat Imam Hussain (radi Allahu anhu). Thus one day Hadhrat Shibly (rahmatullah alaihi) saw in his dream that Hadhrat Imam Hussain (radi Allahu anhu) turned his face away from Hadhrat Shibly (rahmatullah alaihi). Hadhrat Shibly (rahmatullah alaihi) requested: Highness! what error have I done?
Imam Hussains reply: Not an error! Our eyes show humility due to your favour. Until We on the Day of Judgement do not return the favour until then I will not be able to look you in the eye.
Hadhrat Imam Hussain (radi Allahu anhu) shall intercede for the performers of this prayer on the Day of Judgement.

- On the first of Muharram, offer 2 rakaat Nawafil prayers. In each rakaat after Surah Fatiha, recite Surah Ikhlas 3 times. After the salat, pray to Allahu taala for all your needs and desires. - THE FAST OF LAST DAY OF ZIL HAJJ AND 1ST DAY OF MUHARRAM
According to Hadith narrated by Hadhrat ibne Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) reported the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying, If someone fasts on the last day of Zil Hajj and on the first day of Muharram, he will have sealed the old year with fasting and ushered in the new year with fasting and Allahu taala will grant him the atonement (Kaffaraa) of fifty years. (Guniyatul-Talibeen).
A renowned exegetist of the Quran, Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan (Alayhir Rahmah) has stated,
“If a person fasts on the 9th and 10th of Muharram he/she will gain immense reward. If someone cooks delicious foods for his family on the 10th of Muharram, there will be blessings in his house for the whole year. It is better to cook Khichrra (a dish prepared by cooking grinded lentils, rice and meat together) and make Fatiha for Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (Radi Allahu Anhu). This is very tried and trusted. If someone takes a bath on this date (the 10th of Mu?arram) he will be protected from illnesses for the whole year because the water of Zam Zam reaches all the waters on this day.”
[Tafseer Rooh al-Bayan, Vol. 4, Page 142 | Islami Zindagi, Page 102]
- FAZILAT OF ASHURA
Ashura is one of the most sacred day in the sight of Allahu taala. Those who remain busy in worshipping Him on that day get enormously rich reward.
Hadhrat Ibne Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) reported a Hadith that the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying, If someone gives (a thirsty person) a drink of water on the day of Ashura, it is just as if he had never disobeyed Allah for a single instant.
Hadhrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) reported a Hadith that the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying, If someone spends the night of Ashura in vigilant worship, Allahu taala will let him live as long as he wishes.
Hadhrat Sufiyan ibn Uyain (rahmatullah alaihi) was informed by Hadhrat Hafar al-Kulee, who got this tradition from well-known and reputed personality of Kufaa, Hadhrat Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn al-Muntashir (rahmatullah alaihi), the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has said, If someone treats his dependents with special generosity on the day of Ashura, Allahu taala will treat that person with special generosity throughout the rest of the year. Hadhrat Sufiyan (rahmatullah alaihi) says, He gave us that information fifty years ago, and since then we have experienced nothing but prosperity.
Is someone affectionately strokes the head of an orphan with his hand on the day of Ashura, for every hair on the orphans head, Allahu taala will promote him by one degree in the Garden of Paradise. If someone provides a believer with a meal to break his fast at the time of breaking of Ashuraa fast, it will be as if the entire community (Ummah) of the Hadhrat Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has broken fast as his guests and had filled their stomachs to capacity.
The Sahaba (radi Allahu anhum) exclaimed, O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), it seems that Allahu taala has given preference to the day of Ashura over all other days! The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) replied, Yes, Allahu taala created the heavens on the day of Ashura, He created the mountains on the day of Ashura, He created the oceans on the day of Ashura. He created the Pen (Qalam) on the day of Ashura. He created the Tablet (Lauh) on the day of Ashura. He created Adam (alaihis-salaam) on the day of Ashura. He caused him to enter the Garden of Paradise on the day of Ashura. Hadhrat Ibrahim (alaihis-salaam) was born on the day of Ashura and Allahu taala delivered him from the fiery furnace on the day of Ashura, then He redeemed his son from being sacrificed on the day of Ashura. He caused Pharaoh (Firaun) to drown on the day of Ashura. Allahu taala relieved Hadhrat Ayyub (alaihis-salaam) of his trial and tribulation on the day of Ashura. Allahu taala relented towards Hadhrat Adam (alaihis-salaam) on the day of Ashura. Hadhrat Isaa (alaihis-salaam) was born on the day of Ashura. The day of Resurrection will occur on the day of Ashura.
In one Hadith of Muslim, it is recorded that the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam ) said, On the day of Ashurah, the People of Khaibar keep fast, rejoice and dress their wives in good clothes and jewellery. O Muslims! You too should fast on this day.
Hadhrat Qatadah (radi Allahu anhu) reports that the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has stated, On the day of Ashurah I hope that through this (Ashurah) Almighty Allah will make it a means of Kafaara for past sins. (Mishkat Shareef, Pg. 179)
- Important A’maal (practices) on Yaum-e-Ashura:
- Hadhrat Abdullah bin Masud (radi Allahu anhu), reported the following saying of the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam):
Whoever prepares ample food and drink for his family on this sacred day and delights in feeding them generously, Allahu taala will increase his provision for that year and place much blessings and good therein.
- Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reports that Rasoolullah(sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “One who generously spends on his family on the day of Ashura, Allah will increase (his provision) for the whole year.” (Bayhaqi, at-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb)
- It is recorded in Tafseer Roohul Bayaan that the person who stays awake on the night of Ashura gains the Sawaab of the Mala’ikah.
- The Mashaaikh have stated that by making Ghusl on this day, the sicknesses for the entire year are washed away.
- Shaami in Kitaabus Saum states that using surma on this day will not cause the eye to pain for the entire year.
- Meet Ulema and attend special meetings and congregation for this occasion.
- Make a meal of 7 types of grains.
- Visit Shrines of Awliya and graves of Muslims.
- Give as much charity as one can afford.
- Some Other Good Works to do on Ashurah
There is in Taurah about the blessed day of Ashurah that:
Observing fast on this day is as if one fasted the whole year.
Whoever strokes the head of an orphan on this day, for each hair Allah Taala will grace him with a grand tree laden with precious garments and ornaments in Paradise whose quantity is known to Allah Taala Alone.
Allah Taala will illumine the heart of the one who guides an astray person onto the straight path.
Giving alms to a poor beggar this day is tantamount to giving alms to all indigent beggars.
If one suppresses his anger this day (although he is able to retaliate), Allah Taala will enlist him among those with whom He (Allah Taala) is pleased.
Whoever respects and helps the Miskeen (indigent, poor) this day, Allah Taala will bless him in the grave.

After completion of the salaat, go into sajda and recite Surah Kafiroon once and supplicate for any and every need of yours. Allahu taala will grant you all your wishes, Insha Allah.
- The Fasting of Yaum-e-Ashura:
To keep fast on the day of Ashura is worthy of great reward. The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)used to even fast on this day and He used to also command others to fast on this day. It is recorded in Sahihain from Sayyiduna Abu Moosa Ashari (radi Allahu anhu) that the Jews used to respect the day of Ashura and they also rejoiced on this day. The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)commanded, You too should fast in this day.
Fasting the day of Ashura does expiate for the past year, because the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: Fasting the day of Arafah I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of Ashura I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it. (Muslim) This is by the bounty that Allah bestows upon us, whereby fasting one day expiates for the sins of a whole year. And Allah is the Owner of great bounty.
Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) said: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of Ashura, and this month, meaning Ramadan. [Reported by Al-Bukhari, 1867] The meaning of his being keen was that he intended to fast on that day in the hope of earning the reward for doing so.
One of the Salaf is said to have declared, If someone fasts on the day of Aashura, he will threby make up for all the fasts that he has failed to keep in the course of the whole year. And if someone gives charitable donation on that day, he will thereby make up for any charitable donation (sadaqa) that he has failed to give in the course of the whole year.
Hadhrat Shaikh Abu Nasr (rahmatullah alaihi) reliably informs of a hadith, whereby the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) once said, If someone observes a day of fasting during Muharram, for every such day he will be credited with thirty days (fasting).
According to another Hadith, Hadhrat ibne Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) reported the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying, If someone fasts on the day of Ashuraa in Muharram he will be granted the spiritual reward of ten thousand angels. If someone fasts on the day of Ashura in Muharram, he will be granted the spriritual reward of ten thousand martyrs as well as the the spiritual reward of ten thousand pilgrims (Hajis) and visitants (performing Umrah).
HOLY PROPHETS (SALLALLAHU ALAIHI WASALLAM) RECOMMENDATION TO FAST ON 9TH OF MUHARRAM AS WELL
In the year 10 A.H., when the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)was keeping the fast of Ashurah, the Sahaba-e-Kiraam requested, This is that day which is honoured by the Jews and Christians. The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, If I am here next year, then I shall also fast on the 9th (of Muharram). (Mishkat Shareef, Pg. 179) If is for this reason that we should not only fast on the tenth, but also on the ninth of Muharram-ul-Haraam.
The fasting on the 9th Muharram is also mentioned in Sahih Muslim: Hazrat Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) relates the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “If I survive till next year, I will definitely observe fast on the 9th of Muharram (as well).” [Sahih Muslim]
- Why is Kichra cooked during Ashurah?
It is in Shaami: That person who cooks good food on the day of Ashurah, will Insha- Allah, gain Barkat from Almighty Allah in his home for the entire year.
Commenting on this in Tafseer Na’eemi, Hadhrat Allama Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan (Rahmatullah Alaih) writes: In our country Haleem (kichra) is cooked because it contain all types of grains and meat, through which we have hope that there will be barkat in the grain for the entire year. In certain narrations, it has been stated that the day on which the Ark of Hadhrat Nooh (alaihis salaam) came onto land, the inhabitants of the Ark disembarked and gathered all types of grain and cooked it into Haleem (Kichra).
This is also related in a publication by Raza Academy that when Hadhrat Nuh’s (alaihis-salaam) ark came to a rest after the flood, it was the 10th of Muharram, so Nuh (alaihis-salaam) gave the people a list of ingredients to find and then he cooked Kichra!
Therefore, although it is not essential to prepare Kichra, it is a sign of love to imitate Hadhrat Nuhs (alaihis-salaam)actions.

Dua-e-Ashura is recited as follows:
(i) Dua in Section A once and Dua in Section B 7 Times
(ii) Alternative/Additional Dua e- Ashura Section C
(Arabic Text with English Transliteration)
There is great benefit in the recital of this Dua amongst which is the protection of life.
However, Hadhrat Imam Zainul Abideen (radi Allahu anhu) has stated that whoever recites this dua on the 10th of Muharram after Sunrise and before Sunset, or listens to its recitation from someone else, Allahu taala will certainly make it an insurance for an years life for him, by keeping death away from him. However, if one is to become the victim of death in that year, by some strange coincidence, that person will not remember to recite it.
This Dua should be recited before Zawaal on the 10th of Muharram.
The Zawaal time in Manchester on 10th Muharram (2015) is 11.57. Check times for your town with your local mosque.
This Dua is recited after offering two rakaat Nawafil salat. In every Rakah, recite Surah Fatiha and any other Surah. After Salaams, one must recite this Dua.

TRANSLATION OF DUA IN SECTION B
I celebrate the Praises of Allah to the fullness of the balance and the extreme end of the knowledge and to the reach of the pleasure and the weight of the Throne. There is no refuge or asylum but Yours. I glorify Allah with odd and even numbers and all perfect Words of Allah. We seek Your Peace and Grace, O Most Compassionate. For us Allah sufficeth, and He is the Best Disposer of Affairs, the Best to Protect and the Best to Help.
There is no power but with Allah, the Most High, the Great. May Allah send Peace and Blessings to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallal Laahu Alayhi Wasallam), his descendents, his companions, and all the believing men and the believing women according to the number of atoms of the creation and the number of known things.
All Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.
[Recite Durood Shareef at least thrice]
Another narration for alternative/ additional salat and recitation of Dua-e-Ashura is as follows:
In the morning of Ashura, after performing Ghusl, offer 4 rakaat Nawafil salaat. In each rakaat after Surah Fatiha, recite Surah Ikhlas 15 times. After completion of the salat, recite Dua-e-Ashura 10 times and then present the reward of the salat to Hadhrat Imam Husain and Hadhrat Imam Hasan (radi Allahu anhuma). The reward of this salat is very great. Hadhrat Husain and Hadhrat Hasan (radi Allahu anhuma) will do deliverance of anyone who offers this salat and will take him along with them to Paradise.
