Freedom of Religion, Secularism and the Haji Ali Verdict

Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi invites you to a special lecture on Freedom of Religion, Secularism and the Haji Ali Verdicton October 24, 2016 at the FTK-CIT Auditorium at 11:30 am. The lecture will be delivered byProfessor Faizan Mustafa, Professor of Law & Vice-Chancellor, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, India.

The lecture will specifically deal with the Bombay High Courts recently pronounced judgment in Haji Ali Case allowing women to enter the inner sanctum ofHaji Alishrine. Touching upon a brief account of essential practices in religion and essentiality test evolved by the judiciary; the lecture will provide insights into the concepts of secularism and freedom of religion in keeping with the Indian Constitution.

Prof. Faizan Mustafa is a senior law teacher and is presently the Vice- Chancellor of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, a top law university of the country. He was the Founder Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Orissa.

Prof. Mustafa is also Advisor to National Law School & Judicial Academy, Assam. Known for his institution-building abilities and democratic leadership, he was also the founder director of KIIT Law School, Bhubaneswar where he experimented with a novel B.Sc. LL.B course with six papers in Biotechnology and three in Environmental Science to cater to the needs of Patent law. Earlier he has also served as Dean, Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University where he introduced courses like IPR Law, Human Rights Law and Tourism Laws.

He has written eight books and contributed more than 150 articles. He was also one of the contributors to the famousEncyclopedia of Legal Historypublished by the Oxford University Press. Recently he was conferred the SAARCs Best Law Teacher Award.
