LAILATUL QADR : THE NIGHT OF POWER

This is one of the holiest and most blessed nights, which is very likely to occur on one of the odd nights on the last ten days of Ramadan and most likely to be the 27th.

The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said that Shab-e-Qadr is to be searched in the last ten days of Ramadan in one of the nights of 21st, 23rd, 25th , 27th and 29th.

The reward of worship on this night is better than worship of one thousand months, equivalent to a persons lifetime. So on this night one should pray nawafil salaat, recite the Holy Quran, do Tasbih, Duas, etc, as much as possible.

In a Hadith narrated by Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu), the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for reward from Allahu taala, then all his sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allahu taala, then all his sins will be forgiven.

Saints and pious people have studied the Holy Quran and have raised the curtain from many mysteries. One such mystery which is explained to us is about Lailatul Qadr. In Surah Qadr, the word Lailatul Qadr is mentioned thrice. The first ayat, in-na an-zal-naa-hu fi lai-la-til-qadr; the second ayat, wa-maa ad-raa-ka ma alai-la-tul qadr; and the third ayat, lai-latul qad-ri khai-rum-min al-fi shahr. In Arabic language Lailatul Qadr or Lailatul Qadri is composed of nine letters. These nine letters come thrice, its total comes to twenty seven. Some saints have said that in Surah Qadr, the word hiya (this) is the 27th word. All these facts lead us to the conclusion that Lailatul Qadr is the 27th night.

The other factor that points to this conclusion is borne by the following hadith in which the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) emphasised keeping awake all night of the 27th:

Hadhrat Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu)reported that Allahs Mesenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) used to make us offer salaat for two-thirds of the night in the 23rd night of Ramadan, for half the night in the 25th night and up to Saher in the 27th night of Ramadan. (Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi Sharif, Nisai)

Hadhrat Jibreel (alaihis-salaam) comes down to the earth at sunset and remains here till the first ray of the sun hit the earth next morning and showers mercy and peace on those who are busy worshipping. According to another tradition, more angels come to earth than there are tiny stones and pebbles on the earth, and pray for the Ummahs peace.

The significance of this night is that it is neither too cold nor too hot. In this night the worshippers have a feeling of immense satisfaction. And in case anyone feels shivering and tears roll down his eyes, then that means that angel Hadhrat Jibreel (alaihis-salaam) has shaken hands with him.

It is necessary that one should spend the whole night, right from sunset to sunrise the next morning, in worshipping Allah. Eating and drinking are the necessities of human being. So, if these necessities are begun with bis-mil-lah and as one finishes and utters Al-ham-du-lil-laaa-hi Rab-bil aa-lalmeen, then we hope that by the Grace of Allahu taala, that eating and drinking will be considered as worship. This is to ensure that no time is lost on this most blessed night.

On this night one should offer Nawaafil salaat, recite the Holy Quran, say Astaghfaar, repent and pray for pardon, recite Durood sharif and say duas. A special prayer for Lailatul Qadr is:

Allahumma innaka afuwun tuhib-bul af-wa fa-afo anni.

( OAllah! You are the Forgiver and You like forgiving, so forgive me).
