Modernizing Indian knowledge systems to meet new challenges of our times

It is important to preserve indigenous knowledge systems and modernize them
to meet new challenges of our times said Dr. Najma Heptulla. Speaking at
the National Seminar on Hakim Ajmal Khans Multidimensional Personality
and Enduring Contributions, Dr. Najma Heptulla, Union Minister for
Minority Affairs observed that it was important to preserve our legacy in
respect of proven and efficacious alternative medicine systems such as
*Aryuveda* and *Unani*. She felt that the Ministry of AYUSH is suitably
providing the necessary impetus to modernize these Indian systems of

The two day conference has been organized by Jamia Millia Islamia in
collaboration with Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM),
Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India to pay tribute to Hakim Ajmal Khan
on his 147th Birth Anniversary.

Earlier Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia spoke
about the establishment of Hakim Ajmal Khan Institute for Literary &
Historical Research in Unani Medicine in Jamia Millia Islamia as a tribute
to one of its founding fathers who was the also the first chancellor of the
university. He emphasized the need to modernize the Unani medicine system
and hoped that the on-going collaboration between Jamia Millia Islamia and
CCRUM, Ministry of AYUSH, GoI would develop areas of research that will
enable the collaborating partners to emerge as domain leaders. He also
spoke about the possibility of giving joint research degrees in
collaboration with Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Hyderabad
in near future.

Our Indian institutions have achieved great heights as overseas students
come to us today for knowledge, said Dr. Heptulla. She praised the Prime
Minister for establishing Ministry of AYUSH for the promotion of indigenous
medicine systems.

The inaugural session saw presentation of a keynote address by *Prof Altaf
Ahmad Azmi,* Former Dean, Faculty of Islamic Studies & Humanities, Jamia
Hamdard University.

*Prof G. N. Qazi,* Vice Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard University described
Hakim Ajmal Khan as a traditional healer who paved the path for the
advancement of alternative medicine system in India by giving due
prominence to *Aryuveda* and *Unani* among other alternative medicine

Earlier, *Prof. Rais-ur-Rahman,* Director General, CCRUM welcomed the
distinguished guests and the audience to the inaugural ceremony.

*Dr. Mohammad Fazil,* Organizing Secretary of the National Seminar proposed
the vote of thanks.

It is worth noting that all speakers highlighted the enduring contribution
of the multidimensional personality of Hakim Ajmal Khan who was truly one
of the gems of India.
