People in PoK are protesting against lack of schools and basic infrastructure and against tax loot

oices of protest in many areas of Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) have stepped up repeatedly in the face of what many locals say is Islamabad’s indifferent attitude. The most recent protest was held in Tarar Khel where, despite paying taxes, local people ruled lack of basic infrastructure.

News agency ANI reports that there have been anti-Pakistan protests here with people wondering why they are being ignored. “Basic infrastructure such as schools and colleges is our right and not a privilege for those who govern. Taxes we pay go into the hands of those in control,” said one protester. “PM after PM only make false promises.”

It is not the first or the only allegation that people living in PoK have levelled at Islamabad. Recent months have seen the carrying out of protest marches in which people have requested a range of services such as improved medical facilities, proper administration and clean water. Yes, earlier this month a large number of Muzzafarabad residents also accused Pakistan of waging water war on them, saying water from Neelum River in PoK is being diverted to Punjab province in the region. They have also protested against the proposed Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project.

Then there are accusations that the Pakistani forces have repeatedly resorted to brutalities in order to clamp down protesting voices. Last month there were large-scale protests in at least two PoK cities against the Pakistani Army.
