Tipu Sultan- truth and illusions

By Muhammad Shafeeq CM, Word for Peace

Tipu sultan was a patriot and martyr who led a splendid fight against the British imperialism. (1750-1799). Also he was the one who is being greatly misunderstood and disfigured among the freedom fighters of our nation. In an era, where the great patriots of the country are being neglected continuously from the history as a part of cultural nationalization, its very important for us to popularize the real historical records.

As an offspring of Hyder Ali and Fathima Fakhr-un-nisa, Tipu Sultan[Fatheh Ali Khan] was born at Banglore on November 10, 1750[Friday,Dul Hijja-10, 1163AH]. As a part of commemoration of the sufi saint Tipu, his parents called him as Tipu. After capturing the power, he was came to be known as Tipu Sultan.

Tipus Internal Policies

Hyder was died on December 6, 1782. Then Tipu came to power on December 22, 1782 by a simple crowning function. He followed the internal policy of mingling the different people. As he was the king of Mysore province were 80 to 90 percent of the people were Hindus. It was the style of Tipu to start the military assault by doing worship at Shringeri Temple. The book, Mysore Gazetteers which was edited by Shri Kandayya explored the information that Tipu had allowed annual grant to 156 temples and gave special expense from the treasury for the repairing of temples. Between 1782 and 1799, he implemented 34 kings orders which gave donation to temples. He offered many greetings and price to the holy centers of Hindus. After analyzing such records objectively, the famous historian B.A Saltayer Quoted about Tipu as The defender of Hindu Dharma.

The Shringeri Attack

At 1791, the troop of Maratha under the leadership of Parashuram Bava, plundered the wealth of Badnur. The monastery of Shringeri and the golden idol of Saraswati Dewi were also looted. The temple of Sharadha Dewi was destructed. The famous Saint Jagadh Guru emigrated for his self-protection. He complained the matter to Tipu. After a sudden response, Tipu made everything fine to protect Shringeri Temples. The temple of Sharadha Dewi was rebuilt. He arranged all techniques for the repairing and allotted special grants for the temple. Recently, the archeological department has published the 30 letters of Jagadh Guru to Tipu Sultan which he was written in Kannada language. These letters are underlining the secularist attitude of Tipu Sultan.

He was a king who gave a complete protection for the Hindu tradition at Mysore. They were Hindus who took the flag in constitutional matters of Tipu Sultan. The Prime Minister of Tipu was the Brahman Poonayya. Subbharaavu was the leader of soldiers, Krishna Raavu was the treasurer. Shamayya Ayyankaar was the minister of defense affairs. Mulchand, Sujan Ray was the representative of Mysore at Mughal Empire. The team under the leadership of Pilladi Mehth who was a devoter of Shiva was the bodyguard of Tipu Sultan. After defeating the Malabar, the crown was handed-over to Madunna who was a Brahman. Because of these appointments, the Hindu believers were not ready to disapprove Tipu Sultan at the period of 1782-17899. His captal was Shrirangapattanam which was in the name of Sri Ranga Nadan. The Shriranga Nada swami temple which was built in the 10th century and the palace of Tipu which raise his head near the temple are some outstanding answers for the stories of destruction of Temples.

Tippus External Policy

Tipu Sultan was an extra ordinary ruler from India who furnished an excellent internal policy by observing the global political condition. By understanding the British idea of dividing nature and imperialistic power, he made an alliance with the French, Nepolean. He also made alliance with the French troop in Mahe. The French soldiers served him by acting as a leader for the Tipus troop and working at high positions. Thus, the troop of Mysore which was framed by French Soldiers by using all modern technologies was too strong and powerful at South India.

Tipu empowered the relations by making continuous alliance with powerful rulers like Sultan of Turkey and Saman sha of Afghanistan. By the help of French Tipu expressed his maximum effort to expel Mughals from the capital city Delhi. It was necessary to keep attachment with France to oppose the sea power British. He has a well knowledge about the imperialistic agendas of British as it may led to a complete disaster for the country. Definitely, Tipu was a fan of the theme provided by French revolutionists freedom ,equality, fraternity. It is a fact that the republic France was a standing example for the beauty of democratic secular government. As part of remembrance of Jacobians who embraced the republican theme Tipu planted a Jacobian tree and formed a Jacobian club.

Invasion of Tipu

Tipu continuously fought against the imperialist and native powers for the enlargement of his territory.Topic stand in front against native kingdoms like Maratha, Malabar, Kodak, Badnur, Carnatic and Thiruvithamkur. Tipu was an intelligent comrade. His military manual fathhul mujahideen is peerless contribution even in the present intellectual context. It is the first which nicely elucidate the working of rocket artillery. He introduced war rockets against British in 1792 and 1799. At a speech held at Bangalorethe Missile man of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam expounded that he is the first person who develop the rockets for wars in the world.

Persecutions at the time of war

Many temples and churches were destroyed at the time of invasion in Kudak,Kanara and Malabar. When Tipu defeated Kanara many Catholics at seashore were arrested and they were brought to Shrirangapattanam. According to Thomas Manro former collector of Kanara about 60000 people were arrested at that time. Among them 7000 were rescued. Christians wealth was looped and 27 churches demolished.

At the time of invasion occurred in Kodak several people were jailed. According to the findings of Mark Wilks who had the responsibility of Mysore resident 70000 Kodak citizens were jailed. Several people among them were compelled for religious conversion. Topic took gravest forms of attacks and demolished temples for sweeping Nayar fighters who stood against the Malabar persecution.(Malabar Muslims of Kerala)

Such kind of persecution is ordinary at the time of invasion. But the statements liketemple demolition and religious conversion are emerged from the misquoting of British rulers. They hardly loved to destroy each and every history of the legend Tipu. This activist wants to be intellectually blocked. William Kirpatric had published the 400 letters of Tipu titled Selected letters of Tipu Sulthan. We can find out the truth that there is no evidenceprovoking Tipu as anIslamic rationalist from these texts.

How can we able to criticize Indira gandi by the name of operation blue star? Similarly Topic is also innocent in many issues. Can you able to call Alavudheen Khilji as a Hindu fascist who killed 2 lakhs of Muslim people? Can you able to call Veluthambi Dalava as a terrorist who killed rich christians? Indeed, it is an absence of intelligence if we judge the rulers as a religious fundamentalist from such a context.

Tipu in history

Those who study history with a positive approach will understood the fact that every allegations against Tipu are the creations of collonial powers which have no reality. This not says that Tipu had never demolished a temple. He had destroyed. But it was not an agenda. Indeed he explored symptoms of secularism in each and every corner of Mysore. In academic writings and popular history Tipu is an inevitable personality.

Anti Tipu present scenario

There is no historical background to proclaim a political counter attack against Tipu sulthan.Recently, Sajjay Khan and Akbar khandirected a serial based on the novel the sword of Tipu Which has a vivid demonstration of Tipus life. Now 60 episodes had completed successfully. Also actor Rajani kanth showed his interest to act as Tipu in the film the tiger of Mysore. He was challenged by some fascists. A big group of Tamil citizens are supporting him.

Whatever the history quotes , the truth will remain same. Really Tipu was a pure secularist in a range. Which is beyond our Expectations.
