Barbaric and Brutal Beheading in Udaipur: Strong Condemnation by Civil Society, Faith Leaders, Academics, Journalists and Artists

We, the undersigned from diverse sections of society collective and unequivocally condemn in strongest terms the barbaric and brutal beheading of a person in Udaipur, India, for a social media post defending an obnoxious and reprehensible statement against Prophet Mohammed during a TV discussion recently.

That it is done in the name of religion makes it even more condemnable. No religion, including Islam, allows individuals to take the law into their hands and a due process of law is mandated by all faiths before any person is held guilty and punished.

We understand that the killers are arrested and demand that a special court should be constituted for a speedy trial and given the most stringent punishment possible that could be an example for others.

We also urge upon the government of Rajasthan to be sure that no violence takes place and life and property of all citizens, especially the poor, is fully protected.

The Government of Rajasthan should also provide solace and all possible support to the family of the victim. Thorough investigation as to the involvement of groups/agencies, if any, should be the priority

We call upon and urge the people of Rajasthan and across the country to ensure peace in their neighborhoods and protect the vulnerable from any untoward incidences that might occur.

The level of toxic hate, calls to violence and actual incidences of violence are on the rise for some years now and taking an epidemic form.

Social media has become the major platform for the propagation of unbridled hate and calls for violence against whole communities that are not only totally illegal but have full potential to unleash communal violence across the country that could put our neighborhoods on fire and irrevocably damage the nation itself.

Given such a critical situation that has emerged in the country, the Government of India should immediately act to stop hate-mongering by all sections in all forms. It should take unbiased and stringent action against any individual, group, or section making provocative statements or issuing calls to violence, or indulging in acts of violence.

The Government of India should take all possible measures immediately to ensure the social media platforms cannot be used to spread misinformation and hate.

Finally, the Government of India and the State Governments should ensure that unbiased and appropriate actions are immediately initiated against all without any communal or sectarian consideration that alone can ensure that all fear the law and follow it.

It is to be understood that breaking of the law by any section without fear of legal action not only emboldens them to engage in more violations but could also result in resentment among other communities inciting them to take to violence that can degenerate into a vortex of devastation that can cause irrevocable damage to our country as a whole.

Setting and Reporting The Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) was established in 2007 to strengthen the links and coordinate the Department’s activities in the areas of police, justice and corrections, mine action, the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of ex-combatants and security sector reform.     The Communications and Graphic Design internship in the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions is for a minimum period of three months up to six months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Interns may be assigned to work with specific OROLSI components, including the Justice and Corrections Service, under the direct supervision of the component.

    Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Intern will be responsible for:

    – Assisting the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) with strategic communication and public outreach related to rule of law/security institutions/justice and corrections in peacekeeping; – Assisting in developing and designing communications and multimedia products for web and social networking platforms; – Assisting in developing content of OROLSI or assigned component stories and information to increase awareness and understanding of OROLSI issues; – Assisting with drafting and editing of OROLSI or assigned component publications (e.g. fact sheets, brochures, newsletters and donor-related updates) for internal and external purposes; – Conceptualizing and creating data visualizations and interactive content utilizing design and other software; – Researching, compiling, and drafting information for use in the preparation and production of social media content; – Monitoring and analyzing statistics related to social media content and web analytics-based platforms (i.e. Talkwalker, Twitter Analytics, Facebook Insights). – Performing any other duties as requested by the supervisor.

    Competencies Professionalism:

    – Knowledge and understanding of international relations, political affairs and United Nations peacekeeping; understanding of areas related to the rule of law and security institutions. – Knowledge of, and ability to develop, draft and design communications, outreach and multimedia products. – Knowledge of visual communication and graphic design, and ability to develop creative solutions and produce high quality graphic material; – Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat; – Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; – Commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work.

    Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

    – Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

    (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

    – Be computer literate in standard software applications;

    – Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

    – Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.

    United Nations Considerations According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.   2. Description of Duties and Responsibilities :
    1. Overall academic leadership within the Faculty and inter-faculty coordination, strategic direction and representation of the Faculty at key positions,
    2. Active role in the implementation of the Faculty’s strategic goals,
    3. Chairing the Faculty Executive Committee,
    4. Advisor in academic and administrative staff appointments within the Faculty,
    5. Supervising the educational operation and plans implementation and developing academic programs.
    6. Following up the preparation of the strategic plans of the Centre.
    7. Oversight of the educational departments, academic, research, administrative and student affairs and mantaining the quality standards.
    8. Coordination and cooperation with the management in development of the Centre
    9. Coordination between the Centre and the community institutions and National and International installations in accordance with regulations.
    10. Evaluating the performance of the Faculty and heads of departments, and Enhancing reserach and academic work, exams, and adjusting, accelerating and accentuating the educational system within the Centre.
