UBANG JAYA, Dec 13 — The Federal Territories (FT) Mufti said today that v is an essential concept in Islam and one that the Malaysians should aspire to emulate.

“Existing peace and harmony with non-Islamic beliefs is an essential Islamic principle that is clearly stated in many verses of the Quran, which Muslims have practiced throughout history.

“There is no conflict between Islam and devotion to civil society, social culture and co-existence with others; it is necessary for Islam,” said Datuk Seri Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri  in his speech delivered at the Christians For Peace and Harmony in Malaysia (CPHM) annual Christmas dinner here.

His speech was read by Mohamad Razif, his special officier.

More than 150 people of different denominations attended the dinner at Dorsett Grand Subang, in an effort to promote interfaith understanding.

Zulkifli also spoke of the value of being respectful of others, saying it is compulsory to do so in Islam.

He also suggested banding local religious leaders to speak and strategise ways of dealing with the country’s religious conflicts.

“To achieve this goal, we would like to call on all religious leaders to develop a cultural and intellectual strategy to confront the threat of age-old religious conflicts, religious zealotry and madness of the age.

“It is high time that the Malaysians cherish the peace and harmony we enjoy in this beautiful nation; we know there is a deep love for the country deep in our hearts,” he said.

Zulkifli also invited his office to engage in discussions with all those present at the dinner.

“I would like to invite all religious leaders who are here to come to my office at Putrajaya.

“A glass of teh tarik and nasi lemak together would be a great combination to kickstart a series of interfaith and intrafaith discussions between us.”
