A group of Muslims gathered and formed a human chain around a temple in late last night’s Bengaluru city’s DJ Halli Police Station Limits to protect it from incendiaries following violence in the area.

A Facebook post riddled with communal remarks triggered violent clashes in Bengaluru on Tuesday night in which a mob vandalized a police station and a Congress MLA’s residence. Three people were killed while 60 police officers were left wounded after the mob struck.

Following the arson and vandalism in Bengaluru’s DJ Halli area after night-long tension, police said Naveen has been arrested, whose social media post sparked the vandalism.

As police teams tried to prevent the mob from destroying property and setting fire to items, the mob ramped through the locality. In the area about 10-15 cars were set on fire while a part of the MLA’s residence was damaged as well. Vehicles were destroyed by police and set on fire. A group infiltrated an area under the basement where 200-250 vehicles were set on fire, the Commissioner said.

Thus far, a total of 110 people have been arrested for vandalism and assaulting police personnel during the violence that broke out in Bengaluru’s DJ Halli locality.

Restrictions were enforced in Bengaluru under Section 144 of CrPC, and curfew was enforced in the city’s limits of DJ Halli and KG Halli police station.
