n the occasion of Teachers Day on Saturday, Roohi Sultana, a Kashmiri teacher, was awarded “National Award to Teacher-2020” for demonstrating creative and innovative approach towards teaching.

During a virtual functional at NIC Srinagar on Teachers Day, Roohi Sultana, a resident of Tailbal district, on the city outskirts, was congratulated by President. Sultana was awarded the prize by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar on behalf of the President of India

Every year the MHRD congratulates teachers at national level for their educational achievements.

“I have used a low cost art integrated learning method to teach students throughout my service period. I don’t prefer a method of teaching and learning by pen and paper. I want my students to learn things practically,” Roohi Sultana said.

Roohi Sultana said she keeps students engaged in their studies through “play-way” methods as students are often disinterested with studies particularly at the primary level.

“I teach them to learn numbers, letters, colours and shapes without using pen and paper through the play-way method. I collect ice cream sticks, cardboards from fabric dealers and left out foam from Sofa’s manufacturing units,” she said, adding that the students use this low cost material to draw numbers and letters.

Roohi Sultana said using innovative approaches would help the students improve their language, personality, and physical growth.

Earlier this year, the Union Minister for Human Resource Development (MHRD) congratulated Roohi Sultana for offering the students a model of zero investment innovations.

Roohi Sultana currently works as a Cluster Resource Person at Boys Middle School Tailbal to provide academic assistance to several schools in the Gulab Bagh education zone.

Roohi Sultana completed her masters in Urdu and Kashmiri, and completed B Ed and three years of calligraphy course. “I also did the Hindi Certificate Course and the Special Education Diploma,” she said.

She believes that the department should concentrate on primary schools as far as facilities and academics are concerned, as these schools form the base of the overall education system in J&K.

“If we succeed in improving primary education, the school system will become better. The best lot of the teachers should also be posted in pre-primary and primary schools,” she said.
