(India) Catholic priest receives Corona Warrior awardMumbai: The government of Maharashtra has honoured a Divine Word priest for exceptional service to nation-building.

Father Richard Quadros, director of Sarva Vikas Deep, a social service center at Mangaon in Raigad district on August 15, India’s 74th Independence Day, was awarded the Corona Warrior Award by the disaster management department of Western Indian state.

The Corona Warrior Award contains a citation honouring the priest and it was given by Aditi Tatkare, state Minister for Industry, Mining, Tourism, Sports, Youth Welfare, Information.

Among the dignitaries present were the district collector, and police superintendent.

For the 14 years in the Raigad belt, the Church Center has worked among the poorest of the poor, with a particular emphasis on the Katkari tribe. Tribal society was greatly impacted by the unprecedented national lockdown to control the coronavirus pandemic.

On June 2 the Cyclone Nisarga escalated their misery. During these times, the Church Center served as a warrior organising a safe reverse migration for approximately 1,200 tribals from Karnataka, Telangana and other Maharashtra districts.

It supported government departments in quarantine efforts, providing 3,500 tribals with dry rations throughout the quarantine era, organising community counselling in 90 villages to resolve the social stigma attached to Covid-19, regularising tribal access to the government’s public distribution system (PDS), and later taking relief measures among the cylclone-hit.

Father Quadros said after winning the Corona Warrior Award, he was humbled by the award. “I dedicate this award to the people, in particular the Raigad tribals, who suffer from both the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequences of the super cyclone.”

He also acknowledged the support and cooperation of the Divine Word Society, the Archdiocese of Bombay, the Social Action Centre, the Health Promotion Trust, Raigad Janhit Manch, and Johny Joseph, the former Municipal Commissioner of Bombay, without whose support the award would not have been possible.
