or his “good work” in supporting people during the Covid-19 pandemic, Anbunithi, a lawyer by profession, won an award and Rs 50,000 as a cash reward from a Hindu organisation. The lawyer did not keep the money for himself but used it to set another example of religious harmony.

Anbunithi donated the money to Villapuram Rahmat Masjid volunteers in Madurai who are active in performing the last rites of Covid-19 positive patients who belonged to underprivileged sections of society. So far, volunteers who owe allegiance to Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam have buried 62 positive coronavirus patients belonging to different faiths without charging money from their families.

For 75 days, Anbunithi and a few of his friends distributed three-square meals to lab technicians, sanitary workers and other labourers attached to Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. The Andal Bakthargal Pervai decided to award a reward and present Anbunithi with Rs 50,000.

“I was happy to know the organisation remembered my work and gave me the cash prize. Because I knew volunteers were struggling to raise funds for Covid-19 positive patients’ burial, I agreed to donate the amount to the masjid. Each religion professes devotion, and I felt my decision would help preserve religious harmony, “Anbunithi told DH.

The lawyer, also associated with a political group, said he obtained Andal Bakthargal Pervai’s consent before donating money to the Muslim outfit.

“The Hindu community was more than pleased to announce my decision to help a Muslim organisation that has been active in performing the last rites of Covid-19 positive patients,” Anbunithi said.

Khadar Mohideen of the Villupuram Rahmat Masjid said they shell out anywhere between Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 for burying a Covid-19 positive patients due to strict enforcement of rules and the money donated by Anbunithi has come in handy.

Last rites of many Covid-19 positive patients were complicated as several of their family members were either quarantined at home or hospitalized.

“Under such a situation, the job was left by people like us. Most of the people we buried belonged to the poorer sections of society and most members of the family were either under quarantine or hospitalized. We never saw the faith of people we buried. Muslims, Christians, and Hindus. Some Hindus follow burial practice, “Mohideen told DH.
