t Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Nankana Sahib, on Sunday, three siblings, two Muslim sisters and their Sikh brother from a village near Dera Baba Nanak, had an emotional reunion.

Ulfat Bibi and Mairaj Bibi hugged Beant Singh closely, as they met him in seven decades for the first time.

Natives of the village of Paracha near Dera Baba Nanak, the family migrated to Pakistan when they lost their son and daughter during the violence that marked Partition.

Later the mother, Allah Rakhhi, contacted one of her former neighbours and figured out her son, Beant’s whereabouts.

Beant has since been in contact with his sisters through letters and phone calls. But it was only this year, as part of India’s Sikh jatha (group), that he managed to meet them face to face.

Speaking to the Pakistani daily Express Tribune, Ulfat Bibi said she should be allowed to fly to India to meet her sister-in-law and her nephews and nieces.

Ulfat and Miraj also called on Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan to extend the visa for their brother.

Pakistan and India have agreed to open the Kartarpur corridor to facilitate Sikh pilgrims visiting Kartarpur Sahib, Guru Nanak’s final resting spot.

The gurdwara is located 4 km from the shrine of Dera Baba Nanak, and is visible from the Indian side. At Dera Baba Nanak, Sikhs gather in large numbers to get a glimpse of the gurdwara.
