ew Delhi: Pakistan and Nepal have been re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council; China has won the seat by the smallest margin, while Saudi Arabia has been defeated in the elections.

China received just 139 votes in the General Assembly vote on Tuesday, compared to 180 in 2016, after UN Director Louis Charbonneau of Human Rights Watch tweeted that it “shows that more states are troubled by China’s abysmal rights record.”

Despite its treatment of the Uighur Muslim minority and opposition from several countries and human rights groups, China managed to achieve a victory.

‘States disturbed by China’s record of abysmal rights’

A group of 39 countries led by Germany strongly criticised China at the United Nations last week, saying they were “seriously worried about the human rights situation in Xinjiang and the recent developments in Hong Kong.”

Meanwhile, United States Secretary of State Michael Pompeo slammed the United Nations into the United Nations Human Rights Council for electing “authoritarian regimes” such as China, Russia and Cuba, adding that “validated” was the US decision to withdraw from the council.

Russia, defeated by two votes in 2016, made a comeback, receiving 158 votes.

Although Saudi Arabia has been criticized for its record on human rights, its defeat was a surprise because when it was last elected, it earned 152 votes in 2016.

Millions of Uighurs in concentration camps

Uighur Muslims are facing systematic persecution in China’s restive Xinjiang area.

The New York Times report recently reported that China has closed and demolished many major shrines, mosques and other holy structures across Xinjiang in recent years.

Citing a report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), NYT reported that since 2017, approximately 8,500 mosques have been completely demolished across Xinjiang.

Millions of Uighurs have been arrested  and placed in detention camps that are called “re-education camps” by Beijing. There are reports that the forced sterilisation of Uighur women has also been ordered by Communist China.
