The oldest document describing a Mawlid ‘s public commemoration is Ibn Jubayr (540-614)
Rihal (“Travels”), p. 114-115: “This blessed place [the prophet’s house] is opened to all people.
enter it to receive blessing from it (mutabarrikin bihi), on every Monday of the month of Rabi ` al-
Awwal; for the Prophet was born that day and month.
The 7th-century historians Abul ` Abbas al-`Azafi and his son Abul Qasim al-`Azafi wrote in their
Unpublished Kitab ad-durr al-munazzam: “Pious pilgrims and famous travelers experienced this,
Mawlid’s day in Makkah, no operations are performed, nothing is sold or purchased,
Except the people who come and hurry to his noble birthplace. The door this day
Ka’ba ‘s available and widely visited.
Ibn Battuta ‘s Account of the Mawlid: The famous 8th-century historian Ibn Battuta in his account
Rihla, Vol. 1, pp. 309 and 347, that on every Friday, after the salah, and on the birthday.
