UN-HRC resumes 43rd Session, highlights “Racially-Inspired Human Rights Violations” & situation in Palestine

he United Nations Human Rights Council resumed its forty-third session after being suspended on March 13 due to the Covid-19 outbreak, and the resumed session continues at the Palais des Nations in Geneva from June 15 to19.

“Racially Inspired Human Rights Violations”It began on June 15, 2020 with the presentation of the Secretary-General and High Commissioner for Human Rights reports followed by a general debate on item 7 on the situation of human rights in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories.

It also held an Urgent Debate on the Current Protests of Mr. Dieudonné W. Désiré Sougouri, Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso as Coordinator of the African Group on “Racially Inspired Human Rights Violations.” He said:   
“The tragic events of 25 May in Minneapolis, USA that led to the death of George Floyd led to worldwide protests against injustice and police brutality that people of African descent face in many regions of the world on a daily basis. Unfortunately, George Floyd’s death is not an isolated incident.’

 “Racially Inspired Human Rights Violations”The resumed session was attended by NGOs including the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, as the Council will held public discussions on item 5 on ‘human rights bodies and mechanisms,’ item 6 on the periodic review mechanism and item 7 on the human rights situation in Palestine and the other occupied Arab territories.

Following the suspension of the forty-third session on 13 March, the Council held a number of informal discussions, including a session on 9 April with the High Commissioner for Human Rights, based on the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on human rights around the world and a discussion bringing together members of the Coordination Committee for Intervention, Special Procedures Commissioners of Special Procedures on April 30 for a discussion centered on the action taken by special procedures mandate holders in the context of the Covid-19 outbreak.
