A Practice to Overcome Negative ThoughtsThere is this wonderful meditative practice called ‘Becoming aware of your negative imaginary scenarios.’ It’s really about the fact that we quite often invoke and carry difficult negative thoughts within our mind. And those difficult negative thoughts give rise to difficult feelings, such as anger, hatred, bitterness, the thirst for revenge, and so on. If this is unchecked, difficult feelings give rise to negative imaginary scenarios—thoughts of how you might react in your anger and frustration. Thoughts arise about what you will heatedly say or do. If these negative imaginary scenarios are left unchecked, they might lead you to say or do things that you will profoundly regret later.

To prevent this, there is a helpful spiritual practice. The moment you become aware of these negative thoughts swirling in your mind, do a spiritual intervention. Say to yourself, compassionately but firmly, words like, ‘Cancel, cancel!’, or ‘Not real, not real!’, or “Letting go, letting go”, or ‘I repent, I repent!’. Or, if you are very computer savvy, you might like to say, ‘Delete, delete!’

Now, you might think that all this occurs in the imaginary realm and, thus, these monstrous scenarios swirling about in your mind are harmless. But the scientific truth is that our subconscious does not differentiate between real and imagined, between fact and fiction. Such negative thoughts can become real if they are unchecked. The practice suggested above helps prevent this from happening. Along with this, it creates space for more positive thoughts to take root in your mind, which leads to more positive, life-affirming outcomes.
