he introduction of the modern ‘Aligarh Movement’ cannot be complete without the mention of Prof. Khaliq Ahmad Nizami’s literary contributions as an eminent Urdu literary figure and Sufi scholar and historian. A sincere and enthusiast well-wisher of Aligarh Muslim University, Nizami’s great devotion to Sir Syed’s educational and intellectual mission was exemplary for us.Understanding the key role of Prof. Khaleeq Ahmad Nizami in heralding Sir Syed’s Educational movement!

Be it the modern construction of the AMU in the original style of Sir Syed or actualizing the proposal for the establishment of Sir Syed Academy, the role of Professor Nizami was pivotal.

Notably, when Nizami was the provost of SS Hall at AMU, it was to his credit that the publication of SS Bhatnagar’s book “History of MAO College”, the first historical account of the Aligarh College, was accomplished through concerted efforts and with the help of students.

Similarly, a collection of sayings titled, “Sir Syed Speaks to You” and a very effective and interesting work, the “Shadow Drama on Sir Syed” in Sir Syed Hall which ended with Iqbal’s poem ‘Sayed Ki Loh-e-Turbat’ were spectacular. It was performed on the screen by Rashid Rohullah (younger brother of Khalid Saifullah Sahib of Jamia School) in his melodic and charming voice. Due to Nizami Sahib’s writings and his keen interest in this fine art, it used to be marvelous.

Asad Yar Khan’s Educational Book House had published some of Nizami’s books on Sir Syed and I also saw some of his books printed from Delhi. After his death, Oxford University Press Karachi published the first and fifth volumes of ‘Tarikh-e-Mashaikh-e-Chisht’ with great care. But the truth is that in the life of Professor Nizami, his books could never be published with the prompt attention and splendor they deserved. Even Professor Nizami himself did not take much interest in publishing his own works in his lifetime. But now that his books are being published in a modern style, it is to be hoped that at least all his books in Urdu will be published with a meticulous care, as is the standard of ‘Armaghan-e-Aligarh’. Not only this, but the beautiful Indian edition of ‘Tarikh-e-Mashaikh-e-Chishti’ should also be published for those interested in this important subject.

From the inauguration of the Madrasa-tul-Uloom in 1875 to the “Nazar-e-Aligarh” of Majaz (which stands now as the pride of the people of Aligarh and the anthem of the university). It has collected all the poetic endeavors of Altaf Hussain Hali, Allama Shibli Nomani, Maulana Zafar Ali Khan, Shams-ul-Ulama Maulvi Nazir Ahmad, Akbar Allahabadi, Nawab Mohsin-ul-Mulk, Maulvi Ismail Meerathi, Chaudhry Khushi Muhammad Nazer, Allama Iqbal, Hamid Hassan Qadri, Maulana Muhammad Ali Johar and their elder brothers Munshi Zulfiqar Ali Gohar, Sajjad Haider Yildirim, Maulana Muhammad Aslam Jairajpuri, Hashmi Faridabadi, Aziz Luckhnawi, Jalil Qidwai, Iqbal Sohail, Hafeez Jalandhari and Josh Malihabadi over a period of about 75 years. The creative victories of Sir Syed known as Pir-e-Dana (the wise saint of Aligarh), his son Syed Mahmood and other comrade are certainly a rare gift.
