Dalai Lama: Religion is like medicine, one doesn’t suit all

"All religions teach the same things, essentially. I never said that for inner peace, Buddhism is the better religion, it is up to a person what will work for them."

“Religion is like medicine, and no medicine suits all,” the 14th Dalai Lama said on December 17.

Dalai Lama: Religion is like medicine, one doesn’t suit allThe Dalai Lama spoke on Friday at the Techfest, hosted by the Indian Bombay Technology Institute.

“All religions teach the same things, essentially. I never said that for inner peace, Buddhism is the better religion, it is up to a person what will work for them.”

He said India has been secular for thousands of years, and can be an example of world peace and harmony. “India has a 3,000-year religious peace tradition. This country should combine modern science and technology education with the old wisdom of inner peace, and can make a significant contribution to world peace, “the Dalai Lama said.

He said he has been working for over three decades with the best scientists in neuroscience, cosmology, psychology, and most of them now believe that there is a consciousness that controls the human mind. “At kindergarten level, modern psychology predates ancient Indian knowledge of psychology. Modern science aims to examine the ancient wisdom of meditation, and control the emotions of a human mind to achieve inner peace, “the Dalai Lama said.

Highlighting the educational need he said, “Education is extremely necessary. With the help of education, people can manage their emotions better.” The Nobel laureate said a healthy mind is required to excell in life. “We can think clearly only with a calm mind, too many feelings hamper decision-making, if we have just inner peace then the mind is rational and able to investigate intelligently.”

He said the 20th century saw world wars and civil wars, a period of violence and destruction. “It is expected that the 21st century will be one of harmony and happiness. When this generation is taught by a mixture of science and technology, and inner values, then the world will see harmony,” he said.

The Dalai Lama has said one’s action should be Ahimsa (non-violence) and the reaction should be Karuna (compassion). “A mind without consciousness is useless; one must learn to be frustrated through preparation,” he said.

On being asked whether the world should see a woman as a Dalai Lama he said, “If a woman has all the senses of the lineage that culture demands then why not. Throughout the 21st century, the 14th Dalai Lama can also be turned into a female.”
