FASTING IN THE BIBLE
JUNAID KHALEEL NURANI
Muslim must refrain from all food, drinks, and things that break Fast from dawn to sunset in the Holy month of RAMADAN. Holy Quran mentions that Fasting was compulsory even in the previous community:
O, Believers! Fasting has been made obligatory upon you as were made obligatory upon those before you, so that you may become pious. (Surah Al-Baqara 183)
From Old Testament
Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Jacob, David, Solomon, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah John, Jesus like all Prophets and pious people did the Fast in a different way like three, seven, twenty-one, thirty, forty days.
Jehoshaphat was frightened and prayed to the LORD for guidance. Then he gave orders for a fast to be observed throughout the country.(2 Chronicles 20:3)
Thereby the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for us all to fast and humble ourselves before our God and to ask him to lead us on our journey and protect us and our children and all our possessions.( Ezra 8:21)
When I heard all this, I sat down and wept. For several days I mourned and did not eat. I prayed to God,(Nehemiah 1:4)
After fifty-two days of work, the entire wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month of Elul.(Nehemiah 6:15)
The people of Nineveh believed God’s message. So they decided that everyone should fast, and all the people, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth to show that they had repented (Jonah 3:5)
God saw what they did; he saw that they had given up their wicked behavior. So he changed his mind and did not punish them as he had said he would. (Jonah 3:10)
From New Testament
Jesus himself took fast for forty days:
After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry. (Matthew 4:2)
We can see teachings about fasting throughout the Bible as in Islam:
“And when you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.
When you go without food, wash your face and comb your hair, so that others cannot know that you are fasting—only your Father, who is unseen, will know. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.(Matthew 6:16-18)
In the church at Antioch, there were some prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon (called the Black), Lucius (from Cyrene), Manaen (who had been brought up with Governor Herod), and Saul.
While they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said to them, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul, to do the work to which I have called them.”
They fasted and prayed, placed their hands on them, and sent them off.(The Acts 13:1-3)
