Azim Premji’s Wipro Turns its Pune IT facility into COVID-19 Hospital with 450 beds

PUNE – In its effort to help the Maharashtra government address the unprecedented health crisis resulting from the COVID-19 or Coronavirus pandemic, IT czar Azim Hashim Premji’s Wipro Ltd has turned its IT facility into a 450-bed COVID-19 dedicated hospital here.
In about a month of signing an MoU with the Maharashtra government Wipro completed the work.
The hospital was inaugurated Thursday by State Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray via online interaction.
“Today, Chief Minister Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray inaugurated the well-equipped Covid-19 Hospital built by Wipro in Hinjewadi, Pune,” the office of Maharashtra CM in Marathi tweeted with photographs of the opening.
Rishad Premji, the Chairman of Wipro, thanked Thackeray.
“Thank you to Maharashtra’s Honorable CM, Shri Uddhav ji, for inaugurating the repurposed campus of Wipro in a Covid 19 hospital with 450 beds in Pune. Thanks to the Maharashtra Govt for their strong help in allowing for a one-month turnaround, “Rishad Premji said in a Thursday night tweet and shared some hospital images.
Wipro and the Maharashtra government had signed an MoU during the first week of May to repurpose their IT facility as a Covid hospital in Pune.
The 450-bed hospital, to be designed to handle intermediate cases, will have 12 beds to stabilize critical patients before moving them to a tertiary care center, according to a statement by Wipro after signing the MoU. This is an separate, segregated dedicated Covid-19 complex which also includes 24 accommodation rooms for doctors and medical staff.
In addition to hiring an administrator and skeletal support personnel, Wipro has agreed to provide physical facilities, medical furniture and equipment to help the hospital operationalize efficiently with the medical professionals needed.
Rishad Premji had said: “We are fully committed to supporting the response of the country to the pandemic and believe we must all work together to address this crisis and minimize its human impact. We stand firmly with the Maharashtra government in its fight against Covid-19.
Maharashtra CM, Thanking Wipro’s effort, said: “This Wipro humanitarian contribution will further strengthen our medical infrastructure and benefit the medical fraternity that is at the forefront of our fight against the pandemic.”
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, the total number of confirmed COVID cases has reached 97,648 – 47980 of these are active cases, 46078 have been cured / discharged and 3590 have died.
Instead of contributing the sum to the PM Cares Fund, Wipro chose to help bring the committed medical and service community to the forefront of the fight against the pandemic in various parts of the world. It has been observed that the contribution of Wipro in TV and print media could not get much space.
Pune ‘s renowned edupreneur PA Inamdar had converted 9000-square-foot space from his Azam Campus grand mosque into a quarantine facility in April.
