AMU, first Indian university to be a member of UN-GGIM

ligarh Muslim University (AMU) is the first Indian university to become a member of UN Global Geospatial Information  Management (UN-GGIM). AMU will play a role in fostering international cooperation in the field of global geospatial knowledge management through its interdisciplinary Remote Sensing department and GIS Applications.

UN-GGIM membership was given only to 49 educational institutions from around the world. This list includes Ivy League, Yale University and other esteemed learning institutions such as the University of California and Melbourne University along with AMU.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor, congratulated AMU on this achievement and applauded their work efforts over the years.

Prof. Qazi Mazhar Ali, Chairman of the Interdisciplinary Department of Remote Sensing and GIS Applications, said that as a member of UN-GGIM, AMU will assist in the creation and management of global geospatial knowledge and encourage its use in resolving global issues while at the same time working towards the highest and widest usefulness in serving people, the earth, stability, peace and cooperation. He also added that membership would enable the University to organise national and international academic events to analyse data, collect and train geospatial information to achieve goals of sustainable development.

Prof. Qazi and Dr. Rizwan Ahmad will serve as primary point of contact and second point of contact with the UN-GGIM for interactions and activities. Prof. Akram Javed has been named as the lead delegate to fulfill the shared goals of UN-GGIM and the Remote Sensing and GIS Applications interdisciplinary team.

Earlier in May Prof. Qazi introduced the proposed Expression of Interest ( EOI) for membership. After a vote at the University of Melbourne, AMU was eventually chosen as a Student.
